The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) maintains Alert Level 4 over Taal Volcano.
Three road sections have been temporarily closed around the volcano and more than 600 flights cancelled due to the ash fall. Partial power interruption were also reported in seven towns within and near the 14-kilometre danger zone. Several towns, including some cities in Metro Manila, have suspended classes and work.
159 evacuation centres have been set up and approximately 9,000 families are estimated to have been displaced. Hazards related to the volcanic activity include base surges, ash falls and ballistic projectiles, lava flows, tsunamis and flooding, landslide, fissures and subsidence
The volcano’s recent activities are characterised by continuous eruption of the main crater due to magmatic and hydrovolcanic activities. As of 0100 hours local time today (14 January), a total of 212 volcanic earthquakes had been recorded in the area. Such intense seismic activities signifies continuous magmatic which may lead to further eruptions.
Civil aviation authorities are strongly advised to command aircraft to avoid the volcano’s surrounding airspace. However, in Manila, about 60-km away from the volcano, improvements on air quality and visibility have been observed and the city’s airport yesterday resumed partial operations.
Total evacuation of Taal Volcano Island and areas at high risk within a 14-kilometre radius is urged. Nearly half a million people are estimated to be within the danger zone.
