Tropical Cyclone Jasper update (12 December)

12 Dec 2023 / Queensland, Australia

Tropical Cyclone Jasper, moving west northwestwards, is expected to cross the Far North Queensland coast tomorrow (Wednesday 13 December).

Areas in the Warning Zone are: Cape Flattery to Townsville (not including Townsville), including Cairns, Innisfail, and Palm Island.

Areas in the Watch Zone are: Cape Melville to Cape Flattery, extending inland to include Palmerville and Chillagoe.

According to the Tropical Cyclone Advice Number 10 Issued at 4:59am EST on 12 December 2023, at 04:00 EST the Category 1 cyclone was located within 45km of 16.7 degrees South, 148.6 degrees East, estimated to be 305km east of Cairns and 345km northeast of Townsville, and moving northwest at 8km per hour. It has sustained winds near the centre of 85km per hour with wind gusts to 120km per hour.

Tropical Cyclone Jasper is expected to re-intensify today as it moves west northwest. It is forecast to cross the coast as a Category 2 system on Wednesday, most likely between Cooktown and Innisfail. Jasper will weaken as it moves inland during Thursday towards the Gulf of Carpentaria. If the system is slower and crosses overnight Wednesday or Thursday morning, a very slim chance remains of a severe Category 3 crossing.
