Tropical Cyclone Jasper is moving westwards towards the Far North Queensland coast and forecast to cross the coast during Wednesday as a Category 2 system.
According to the Tropical Cyclone Advice Number 3 issued at 4:46am EST today (11 December), Jasper is currently a Category 1 cyclone with sustained winds near the centre of 85km per hour with wind gusts to 120km per hour. It was located within 45km of 17.4 deg. South / 151.4 deg. East, estimated to be 600km east of Cairns and 530km east northeast of Townsville, moving westwards 20km per hour.
Tropical Cyclone Jasper has weakened into a category 1 system, but is forecast to re-intensify during Tuesday as it approaches the coast. The system is now forecast to cross as a category 2 system as it makes landfall during Wednesday, most likely between Cape Flattery and Cardwell. Jasper will weaken as it moves inland during Thursday towards the Gulf of Carpentaria. If the system is slower and crosses overnight Wednesday or Thursday, a slim chance remains of a severe category 3 crossing.
CAPE FLATTERY (Yellow warning)
At 1700 Hours on 10 December, the Regional Harbour Master advises a weather event is likely within the next 24-48 hours, with the following instructions:
- Vessel operators and owners should review their safety plans and address any outstanding matters.
- Suspend all cargo or trading operations and obtain a situation report on state of operations including draft.
- Inform ships’ masters of situation and place a short notice to sail.
- Obtain information on length of time to bring ships to a readiness to sail.
- Inform Regional Harbour Master of situation and ascertain suitable sailing times and draft requirements.
- If time permits, resume cargo, trading operations or ballast operations.
- Bring ship to satisfactory handling trim and safe transit draft.
- Small vessels to cyclone mooring areas.

ABBOT POINT & PORT OF HAY POINT INCLUDING DBCT
The Harbour Masters for both regions have not closed either port at present. However, terminals have decided to cease vessel operations and berths are kept vacant until the weather threat is intermit.
Abbot Point: Berths kept vacant till weather threat is intermit.
DBCT: Berths kept vacant till weather threat is intermit.
Hay Point: Berths kept vacant till weather threat is intermit. Berth No.1 is currently under maintenance until 15 December.
