As we continue to rely ever more heavily on technology in our daily lives, personal information has become a value commodity and, as such, a target for cybercriminals. Safeguarding our own and others’ personal information - anything from our name and address to our financial information and browsing history – is more important than ever before.
Today (28 January) is Data Privacy Day, part of the ‘STOP. THINK. CONNECT’ global campaign to raise awareness about the importance of protecting personal information online as an initiative of the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA).
Cybercriminals can use personal information for various immoral purposes, such as identity theft, fraud and phishing scams. This is why we all must take steps to protect ourselves and our personal information online.
One of the best ways to protect personal information is to be aware of the types of information that should be kept private, and to be cautious about sharing that information online. This includes being aware of the types of information that are requested when creating online accounts, and being mindful of the types of sites and apps that ask for personal information.
Another important step in protecting personal information is to use strong and unique passwords for all online accounts. This can prevent cybercriminals from gaining access to personal information by guessing or cracking passwords. It is also important to be aware of the types of phishing scams that are out there and to be wary of any unsolicited emails or text messages that ask for personal information.
Data Privacy Day is a reminder to all of us to take steps to protect our personal information online. By being aware of the types of information that should be kept private, being cautious about sharing that information online, and using strong and unique passwords, we can all help to safeguard our personal information and protect ourselves from cybercriminals.
