29 Dec 2020 / Reunion
Following the announcement of a new variation of the COVID-19 virus in South Africa, the Reunion Port Authority has advised on 24 December 2020 of significantly modified measures to be taken for seafarers on vessels that have called in South Africa in the 15 days of arrival into Reunion. All shipping companies are subject to these measures.
Seafarers onboard ships that have called South Africa are no longer allowed to go ashore unless they produce a negative result of an RT-PCR test carried out within 72 hours prior to disembarkation.
To carry out this test, the seafarers must be picked up from the ship’s accommodation by a motor vehicle which drives them directly and without any stop to the place of the test.
After proceeding to the test, seafarers are to be taken back on board under the same conditions and must remain there until their results are communicated. The results of the tests are to be transmitted in real-time by the shipping company or its agent by electronic message to the Harbour Master’s office and to DMSOI.
This rule now applies to seafarers on a stopover as well as to those affected by a crew change procedure.
Arrangements can be made to organise that a representative from a laboratory embarks the vessel at OPL to proceed with the RT-PCR testing onboard the vessel. Only RT-PCR are allowed as antigenic tests can’t detect this new variation of COVID-19.
