22 Jan 2024 / Mauritius
The Mauritius Meteorological Services issued a Cyclone Warning Class I for Mauritius on Monday 22 January 2024 at 1010hrs and highlighted that on Monday 22 January 2024 at 1000 hours, the Monsoon Trough was located along 17 degrees south all the way from East Africa to the Central Indian Ocean.
A vast area of low pressure in the Monsoon Trough is located to the north of the Mascarenes with a marked low pressure with its centre near 16 degrees south and 58 degrees east. This system has the characteristics of a monsoon depression and is evolving in a favourable environment for further intensification.
The low pressure is moving slowly in a general east-south-easterly direction at first and will eventually recurve towards the south, bringing closer to Mascarene region. Most numerical models are agreeing that this marked low pressure will intensify further and is likely to reach the Moderate Tropical Storm stage by tomorrow morning. It will then be named Candice.
By virtue of its position and its movement towards the Mascarene Islands and the likelihood of further intensification by tomorrow morning, a cyclone warning class I is in force in Mauritius…
…There is a need to strengthen vigilance and be ready to activate emergency plans and initiate appropriate actions as follows:
(i) Port emergency plans accordingly; and
(ii) Inform all your stakeholders to exert extra vigilance and initiate appropriate measures…
